53992-hand-holding-earth-.jpg

As we enter a critical era of global society, we’re faced with a pandemic that has quickly altered the way we carry out our current lives. The MOV.E team is looking to gather information about the effects of our present situation, to illuminate overlooked narratives and also to bring to light strategies that are helping communities through these hardships. We’re interested in hearing your story, please share your own personal account/story about how the pandemic has altered one (1) specific aspect of your lifestyle. How is it taking a toll on you financially? Do you have kids at home while you’re continuing to work remotely, and how is that affecting you? How has your community been responding to the current situation? How are you maintaining social interaction safely? What are some activities you are involved with now that you weren’t acting on before? What does your new office space look like? Do you find yourself exercising more? How are you taking advantage of any newly gained space or time? Positive or negative, feel free to express some thoughts on the current situation through the submission below.

OPEN Challenge:

  1. Take one un-edited, original photo that represents how the current pandemic has affected an aspect of your lifestyle (ex: kids being at home, online teaching, social distancing, mental health, financial issues, etc.)

  2. Provide a brief description (130 characters) to elaborate on your image submission explaining the cause and effect of that particular instance.

  3. Indicate keywords (similar to hashtags) that relate to the themes in your photo.

    * All submissions will be subjected to a rating system post-submission for feedback on message clarity. Submissions are also subject to being posted on social media accounts (with authorization from the author).

Blake Kane | Buffalo, NY

Coming from a blue collar family, I have always been taught, “there is no such thing as unusable.” My father is a stone mason, and in a weekend visit with my family, I noticed what appeared to be an ‘explosion’ of a concrete mixer within our garage. Parts and pieces were scattered everywhere. Before I could even ask, my dad said, “We’re fixing them all up. Stripping them down to the bare bones. Scraping layers of concrete sediment off of each bearing and paddle, and then putting them back together and sraight to use.” He then went on to explain the cost of buying such a piece of machinery. Not only was there a high price tag associated with one of these machines, but there was also a sourcing factor - the closest distributor being located in Rochester.

Looking across the shrapnel of this great mechanical endeavor reformatted my perception of sustainability. The increasing demand for rapid delivery and use of products/services may not be the proper direction for our 21st century society. My father could have made the 2 hour drive to Rochester and back. He could have scrapped his previous mixer. He could have purchased a brand new machine. Instead, a little patience and perseverance from his end delivered a cheaper and more sustainable solution for his current mixer dilemma.

So the next time a laptop or phone breaks down, and panic starts to ensue, just stop. Be patient. Get creative. Think of alternate options, and potentially come up with a better solution than just ‘get a new one.’ There is more life to a broken object that meets the eye.

001_Sustainability [Closed]

Sustainability, today, generally refers to the development of various models that allow both the human race and planet Earth to survive. These models are capable of meeting the ever-growing and challenging needs of today without compromising the well-being of future generations. The Earth Charter developed in 2000 broadens the scope of sustainable practices to include a global society “founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.” These goals can only be achieved through reevaluating our positions on environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic practice. Using your own knowledge and experience with the topic, we would like to hear your perspective on a particular focus of sustainability.

OPEN Challenge:

  1. Take one un-edited, original photo that represents what SUSTAINABILITY means to you.

  2. Provide a brief description (130 characters) to elaborate on your definition of the concept of SUSTAINABILITY.

  3. Indicate keywords (similar to hashtags) that relate to the themes in your photo.

  4. Submissions will be sent to another participant for feedback on the photo and impact of its text description. (Provide email)

Challenge Deadline: January 27th, 2019 @ 6:00 PM EST
